DIY Pom Pom Pillow

Ever since I watched a home renovation show where they added a round pillow into their mountain of pillows on their bedspread, I have wanted one. I couldn’t find one that was affordable, so I decided to make one myself.  This is an easy sewing project that is beginner friendly, and the end product is so cute!

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Fabric
  • Pillow insert or stuffing
  • Pom poms ( Click here to see how to create a bunch of pom poms at once)
  • Sewing machine and thread that matches fabric
  • Scissors
  • Separate needle to sew on pom poms
  • Tissue paper for pattern

How to:

Lay out your fabric, you do not need much to do this, You can use scraps from a bigger project as long as its a little bit bigger than your pillow insert. You could also do this as a square pillow.  I chose to have mine reversible by doing a different color fabric on each side.

Set your tissue paper flat on top of your fabric and lay down your pillow insert on top of that.  Draw a circle onto your tissue paper around your pillow insert.  Make sure to add about an inch to the circle so you have room to fit it in after sewing. I would suggest then to grab a compass or something to help you create the circle more precisely so that it ends up being round in the end.  Mine ended up a little weird but I am assuming it was because I was not precise enough when I cut my fabric.

If necessary you should iron out your fabric to get rid of any creases.

You can pin your fabric to the pattern to make it easier for cutting and then you are all set to cut out the fabric.

The next step is to pin your fabric together and sew it on your sewing machine.  If you are a beginning sewer like me, it can be tricky to sew in a circle so take your time.   Make sure to leave an opening so you can add your stuffing or insert. After sewing flip inside out.

Stuff your pillow and start adding pom poms! You need to hand sew up the last bit of edge that you left for your stuffing before adding the pom poms. If you haven’t made your pom poms yet check out my other post that explains a great way to make a lot of them at once.
