How to Grow a Smoothy Garden

SAMSUNG CSC

My family loves smoothies. But berry prices are so expensive!

So, to combat the rising grocery budget I’ve created a garden full of smoothy ingredients! I harvest and freeze these items for fast smoothies any time of the year.

A garden layout for smoothie ingredients is full of fruits, leafy greens, herbs, and a few vegetables that blend well in smoothies. If you have extra space then planning a fruit tree (pear, peach, plumb etc.) may be a great long-term addition to your garden as well.

If you have a sunny 10×10 foot (3×3 meter) garden space and about 15 minutes a day you can manage this smoothy garden!

🟩 Back/North Side of Garden Space: Berries

  • Blueberries (2 shrubs) – Need acidic soil, plant together for best pollination.
  • Strawberries (6-8 plants) – Groundcover, will spread plant near the edge of the bed.
  • Raspberries (1-2 canes) – Trellised at the back and expect to prune them in the late fall or early spring.

Tip: You may need to use bird netting in your area to protect the harvest.

🥬 Middle of the Garden: Leafy Greens

  • Spinach – Cool season, fast-growing.
  • Kale – Year-round green that is a great smoothy base.
  • Swiss Chard & Beets – Adds color and nutrients to any smoothy.

Layout: Alternate rows to stagger harvest by planting spinach in the early spring and late fall and Kale during the warmer summer season.

🌿 Front/South Side of the Garden: Herbs & Add-ons

  • Mint (in a pot) – Adds a fresh flavor to smoothies and a pretty garnish.
  • Basil – Sweet and aromatic, adds lots of vitamins to a smoothy.
  • Lemon Balm (in a pot)– Mild citrusy herb that gives a lemon taste without a lemon tree.
  • Stevia (optional) – Natural sweetener could also use maple syrup or honey.

Note: Contain mint and lemon balm in pots, as they spread aggressively.

🍌 Bonus Plantings: Tropical Container Plants

  • Dwarf Banana Tree (in large pot)- Banna’s make a great smoothy base and if you have the room to move it inside during the cold season then great.
  • Pineapple (in container or mound) – Fragrant and delicious but needs protected in the winter.
  • Aloe Vera (in pot) – For health shots or adding into smoothies. Again these can not handle the cold and will need to be protected.

🛠️ Additional Tips:

  • Pollinators: Add calendula or lavender to attract bees and as a bonus they are also edible in your smoothy or as a smoothing topping.
  • Soil: Use compost-rich soil and mulch with woodchips, leaves or lawn clippings to retain moisture.
  • Watering: Water often, especially for berries and containers. Apply water at ground level and soak soil for 10-20 minutes in the morning or evening.
  • Bee Hive: If you’re up for having bees to harvest honey from than this would be another great addition to a smoothy garden.
