My hubby got me a gorgeous bouquet of flowers for Valentines Day. An assortment of roses, daisies, freesia, carnations, bells, and ferns.
But a week later the roses and bells have wilted making the bouquet look drab. However the rest of the flowers were holding up well.
I didn’t want to throw out the whole bouquet because of a few flowers and I’m sure you’ve had the same dilemma. Here’s an easy way to remake your bouquet to last you another week!
All you need:
- Flowers
- Styrofoam cup
- scissors
- marker
- knife
Here is the process I use.
- Take your styrofoam cup and make sure it fits inside your vase. You want it to sit slightly higher than he top of your vase. I tried two sizes to see which would fit best.
- Start with your marker and place X’s on the cup in a checkerboard pattern.
- Use your knife to slice your X’s. These are the slots your flower stems will go into.
- It’s good for the flower to recut the stems on an angle so they have more surface area to adsorb water, it helps them last longer.
- Start cutting your stems to length. The shorter your stems are in the vase the fuller your bouquet will seem to be. But make sure you leave enough stem to go through the cup and reach the water in the vase.
- Start placing your flowers through the slots. I like to start with the green ferns as a base and then put the biggest flowers above them so they are easily visible.
- Some flowers have multiple flowers on one stem. Use this to make your bouquet balance by separating out stems if you need to.
- If you have places that look empty you can reach in with your knife and make a new slot to add a flower through.
- Once you like the look of your bouquet add some water to the vase.
- Enjoy your newly formed bouquet!
I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. The smell of the flowers fills my kitchen and keeps me smiling while I do the dishes.
Happy extended Valentines Day!
